Parsertime v1.4 - Going Global and the Future of Parsertime

by Lucas Doell, Founder / Lead Developer

We're going worldwide!

Parsertime has undergone major work to support internationalization. With teams in non-English speaking countries looking to analyze their stats, we've launched support for other languages. We currently support English, and have AI-generated translations for Chinese (Simplified) and Korean. Additional languages are coming soon, with Spanish being in the works.

If you're a native speaker and find an inaccurate translation, please report it to us either through the use of the Report a Bug menu within the app or within our community Discord. If you're tech savvy, you can also open a pull request on GitHub. As an open source app, contributions are greatly appreciated, especially for internationalization.

What's next for Parsertime?

Parsertime is now over 1 year old! The project celebrated its first birthday on November 8th. We've seen a lot of growth and I'm very proud of where the project has gone. That being said, development has slowed down for a while now. I personally believe that Parsertime is now feature complete, with no major features on the roadmap for some time.

Does this mean Parsertime won't be supported?

No! Not at all. Parsertime will continue to get patches and bug fixes for the foreseeable future. Support for new heroes such as Hazard will be available same-day and we will continue to work to fix any issues with the service as they appear. New features may be added from time to time, but the development cycle has slowed and releases are no longer guaranteed on a set pace.

Why is Parsertime no longer in development?

A few reasons:

  • There's not much more that I can think to add to the app! As a coaching tool, I feel like Parsertime does everything it needs to do. It handles stat tracking for scrims, individual player stats, and more. If there's features that the community would like to see added, I'm happy to work on it to bring new releases. But for now, I think it's in a good state.
  • Blizzard's disinterest in supporting their community has killed a lot of the passion that I have for developing Parsertime. The removal of the Workshop Inspector settings from the GUI made it very hard for players to access Parsertime, and because this change is only noticeable for players who are either in the Workshop community or competitive scene, Blizzard has no interest in fixing this issue. Despite the community taking notice and asking for a bug fix, it has been several months and nothing has changed. This is a simple fix that I believe would take about 20 minutes to complete. Due to their disinterest in fixing this issue, I have lost a lot of interest in developing a platform so heavily reliant on another company's competence to exist.
  • Parsertime has been a huge investment in both time and money. In the early days before public launch, I had time where I was unemployed and went through quite a bit of my own cash reserves to focus on development instead of finding my next job. This has been both a blessing and a curse. I no longer have any savings left and will be going back to university without any money to support myself. Additionally, hosting costs money and keeping the platform running for our users is not free. While I've done work to keep the costs down, it does add up and I have never come close to breaking even on Parsertime. This has been an excellent résumé project and one that I am very proud of but it is not something I can dedicate my time to forever, especially while returning to school and working part-time to support myself. I am glad I could give back to the community, but this is about as far as I can go.

If you'd like to support my work on Parsertime, please do check out our pricing page. It helps keep the app running and also gets you a few features in the app that otherwise are unavailable. If development does continue, new features are likely to be prioritized for subscribed users.

That's all from me for now, happy scrimming!
